안녕하세요, 나디아 선생님! 자기소개 부탁드립니다ㅎㅎ
안녕하세요! 저는 베이글코드에서 영어 선생님을 맡고 있는 나디아입니다. 저는 미국에서 왔고, 한국에서 선생님으로 일한 지 벌써 8년이 됐네요. (시간 참 빠르죠!) 뉴욕 버펄로에서 자랐고 (버펄로 윙 아시죠? 나이아가라 폭포 바로 옆!) 위스콘신 대학에서 천체물리학과 영어학을 이중전공을 했어요. 안타깝게도, 천체물리학에 대해 배운 내용은 전부 잊어버렸지만, 다행히 영어는 꾸준히 하고 있습니다!
어릴 적부터 다양한 스포츠를 하고 자라서 활동적인 것을 좋아합니다. 다양한 장르의 음악도 굉장히 좋아해요. 한국에서 제가 좋아하는 음악과 운동을 합친 춤!을 배우기 시작했으며 지난 4년 동안 취미로 춤을 열심히 추고 있습니다. 최근, 코로나-19와 최신 페이퍼 마리오가 출시되어 (어릴 때 제가 가장 좋아했던 게임이었어요!) , 게임에도 조금씩 다시 빠져들고 있어요. 게임회사 직원인데… 이런 취미 나쁘지 않죠?ㅎㅎ
Hello, Nadia! Can you introduce yourself, please?
Hi! I’m Nadia, the English teacher at Bagelcode. I’m originally from the US, but I’ve been living and working as a teacher in Korea for 8 years now. (Time flies!) I grew up in Buffalo, NY (home of Buffalo Wings and right next to Niagara Falls) and went to school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, earning a double major in Astrophysics and English. Unfortunately, I forgot everything I learned about Astrophysics, but luckily, I’m still pretty good at English!
I also grew up playing all kinds of sports, and I love being active. In Korea, I combined my athleticism with my love of music and started dancing, and that has been my main hobby and passion for the past 4 years or so. Lately, thanks to Covid-19 🙁 and the release of the newest Paper Mario game, (my favorite game as a kid!) I’ve also been getting back into games a bit. Which is fitting, since I work at a game company and all!
베이글코드에 합류하게 되신 계기가 궁금한데요!
한국에 처음 왔을 때, 4년 6개월 정도 시골에 있는 중학교에서 일했어요. 그 곳에서의 많은 추억들은 평생 마음속에 남을 것 같아요. 학교 아이들 숫자가 많지는 않았지만 즐거운 수업도, 아이들 배구 팀을 코칭하는 것도, 축구 경기에서 응원하는 것도, 학교 선생님들과 여가생활을 함께하는 것도, 그리고 시골의 생활도 참 즐거웠어요. 시간이 흐르고 결국 도시로 이사를 가게 되었고, 서울의 여러 학원에서 근무해보니 입시를 위해 시험대비 수업만 하는 것보다, 학생들이 실전에서 사용할 수 있는 영어 능력의 향상을 도와주는 프라이빗 튜터로 일하고 싶어졌어요. 그렇게 하기 위해 거주비자를 취득했고 학원에 사직서를 제출했어요. 그때쯤 제 친구 알버트한테 연락이 왔어요. 자기가 다니는 회사에서 영어교사를 찾는다는 말이었어요.
솔직히 처음에는 “아니야. 나는 프리랜서 교사가 될 거야!”라고 생각했지만 알버트와 에밀리가 저를 설득했고, 일단 면접은 보기로 했어요. 그런데 놀랍게도 면접을 보고 나서 베이글코드와 제가 아주 잘 맞겠다는 느낌이 들었어요. 베이글코드는 많은 한국 회사와는 다르게, 자기 일에 진심으로 열정이 있는 사람들로 가득 차 있었고 소소하면서도 친절한 회사였어요. 딱 제가 학원을 그만둘 때 가르치고 싶었던 그런 분들이었죠! 베이글코드의 멋진 사내 분위기와 입사 시기 등 모든 타이밍이 완벽하다못해 운명처럼 느껴졌어요. 기대했던 것처럼, 저와 함께 일하고 공부하는 베이글코드 멤버들은 담당한 업무뿐만 아니라 영어 학습에도 엄청 열정적인 분들입니다! 그래서 지금도 베이글코드에서 재밌게 일하고 있어요!
I want to ask you what made you join Bagelcode!
For my first four and a half years in Korea, I worked at a public middle school in the countryside. I genuinely loved it. From teaching the kids in small, manageable classes to coaching their volleyball team, to cheering them on at the soccer games, I really immersed myself in the work and in the community. But eventually I felt it was time to move to the city. After working at various private academies in Seoul, I decided that I would like to work as a private tutor who could help students achieve their personal goals and teach them useful, real-life English, rather than just “teaching to the test”.
So I earned my residency visa and quit my job at the academy. It was at just that time, that a friend of mine, Albert, told me that his company was looking for an English teacher.
To be honest, at first, I was like, “Nah. I’m going to become a freelance tutor!” But after a little bit of persuading, I decided to at least come in for an interview. And to my surprise, it seemed like a great fit. Bagelcode, unlike many other Korean companies, was a small, close-knit company, filled with people who seemed genuinely passionate about their work. And those are exactly the kind of people I had hoped to work with when I had quit my previous job. Actually, with the atmosphere of the company and the perfect timing, it seemed a little bit like fate, so I happily accepted the job when it was offered! The employees at Bagelcode who I am lucky enough to work with are incredibly dedicated not only to their work, but also to learning English. And that makes being a teacher here so much fun!
선생님의 수업 철학이 궁금해요..! 혹은 수업 방식이나 커리큘럼에 대해서도 말씀해주실 수 있으신가요?
제 수업은 두 가지에 초점을 맞춘답니다. 커뮤니케이션과 자신감이요. 어떤 언어이든, 심지어 그 언어가 유창한 사람에게도 누구에게나 의사소통은 어려울 수 있어요. 모든 사람들이 서로의 생각을 잘 주고받는 것은 매우 중요하다고 생각합니다. 언어는 의사소통을 위한 도구일 뿐이죠. 영어 선생님으로서의 제 역할은 사람들에게 의사소통을 통해 목표를 달성할 수 있는 도구를 주는 것이에요. 영어 실력이 이미 높은 분들께는, 우리 글로벌 팀이 언어에 있어서 오해 없이 원활한 소통을 할 수 있도록 더 명확하고 자연스러운 표현을 알려주는 것일 수도 있구요. 영어를 많이 사용해 본 경험이 없는 분들께는, 완벽하지는 않더라도 다른 사람들이 이해할 수 있게 자기가 표현하고 싶은 생각을 다 말할 수 있도록 조금 더 기본적인 도구를 주는 것일 거에요.
한국 교육 시스템은 완벽을 많이 강조하는 것 같아요. 심지어 많은 한국 사람들은 성인이 되어서도 완벽해야 한다는 생각에 사로잡혀 계세요. 이 생각에서 조금이라도 벗어날 수 있게 자신감을 키우는 것도 매우 중요하다고 생각합니다. 거의 완벽한 영어 실력을 가지고도 자신감이 없어서 말씀을 못하는 경우도 많아요. 어떻게 보면, 저조차도 영어가 완벽하지는 않죠! ㅎㅎ 복잡하고 헷갈릴만한 언어에요. 그래서 저는 학생들이 수업을 최대한 편하게 느끼도록 노력하고 있어요. 수업 시간은 물론, 수업 외에 영어가 필요할 때에도 편하고 자신감 있게 영어를 쓸 수 있기를 바랍니다.
What is your teaching philosophy? Or teaching style and curriculum?
My teaching philosophy focuses on two points: Communication and Confidence. Communication can be hard for anyone in any language, even if everyone’s fluent. So I think that making sure everyone’s on the same page is super important. Language — in this case English — is just a tool for that. So my main goal is to give people the tools to communicate. If their English level is already high, that means tweaking and perfecting the little things to make them more clear or natural. This helps make sure there are fewer misunderstandings among our global teams. For those who have less experience using English, my goal is to give them the basic tools, so they can better express themselves and get their points across, even if their English isn’t perfect.
Speaking of perfect, one thing I learned about the Korean education system is that it stresses perfection. Unfortunately, that sticks with a lot of Koreans even into adulthood. So to me, it’s very important to help develop the confidence of our employees. Some people with nearly perfect English are often still too shy to express themselves. I hate to admit it, but even my English isn’t perfect! It is a complicated and confusing language. So my teaching style is to attempt to make students as comfortable as possible. So hopefully, as they become more comfortable using English in class, when they need to use it outside of class they will also be comfortable and confident enough to do so!
혹시 인상 깊었던 학생이나 순간은 없었나요?
물론, 베이글코드의 직원들과 함께했던 좋은 추억이 많죠. 특히 베이글코드 직원 분들이 영어 실력이 늘어가는 모습을 보면서 기억에 남는 일이 많아요. 이 질문을 듣자마자 열심히 공부하시는 몇 명 학생 분들이 바로 생각났지만 누군가를 부끄럽게 하고 싶지 않아서 이름은 언급하지 않을게요!
수업할 때 가장 좋아하는 부분 중 하나로 영어로 장난치고 즐겁게 대화할 수 있는 순간들을 꼽을 수 있을 것 같아요. 몇 달 전에도 그런 순간이 하나 있었어요. 그룹 수업에서, 어떤 문법 포인트를 연습하기 위해 “다음 주의 계획”에 대한 주제로 대화를 시작했어요. 첫 수업 때 수줍음도 많으시고 영어 말하기를 조금 두려워하시는 것 같았던 세 직원들께서 완벽한 영어 표현으로 서로 장난도 치시면서 즐겁게 하와이 여행을 계획하시고 아주 자연스럽게 이야기를 나누시는거에요! 저는 그 모습을 그저 흐뭇하게 바라만 보고 있었죠. 수업 내내 거의 아무 말도 안 한 것 같아요! 영어를 자연스럽고 편하게 쓸 뿐 아니라 영어를 즐기고 자신의 개성과 유머까지도 표현하는 그런 순간들이 너무 좋습니다!
Have you ever had a memorable student? Who is he/she?
Sure, I have lots of memorable moments with my former and current students at Bagelcode, particularly watching them grow and improve. When I first read this question, a few people and their tremendous effort and improvement both in my class and on their own time jumped to mind. But I don’t want to single anyone out and make them feel embarrassed, so I’ll keep it a little light-hearted!
One of my favorite parts about teaching is the in between moments where we can joke around and have fun as we learn and practice English. So I’ll mention one of those moments from a few months ago. In a group class, we were practicing a particular grammar point and I asked them to prepare some “plans for next week”. When I first met Yoonjae, Sangjik, and Dohyung, all of them were rather shy and somewhat afraid to speak English. But suddenly they were all planning these elaborate trips to Hawaii in perfect English, and I just got to sit on the sidelines and laugh along with them. I think I hardly said anything the whole class! I really love moments like that where I can see them not only clearly AND comfortably using English, but also enjoying themselves and expressing their own personalities and humor in English as well! They’re really funny guys!
베이글코드의 영어선생님으로서 가장 자랑스러운 순간이 언젠가요?
흠… 하나만요? 전 매일매일 베이글코드가 자랑스러운걸요!
저랑 수업하시는 분들은 아시다시피, 저는 수업에 참고할 만한 아이디어를 얻기 위해 매일매일 백만 개 정도의 슬랙 메시지를 보고 있습니다. 근데 그 메시지들에서 영어수업에서 가르쳐 드린 부분이 실제로 적용 된 것을 보면 기분이 아주 좋습니다! 제가 가르치는 영어가 정말 업무와 의사소통에 도움이 된다는 것이 느껴지면 일이 보람 있다는것도 느껴져요! (특히, 배운 걸 업무에 정말 잘 사용하는 DATA&AI 팀!! 인정해주고 싶어요!)
When is your proudest moment of being an English teacher at Bagelcode?
Oh…only one moment? I am proud every day!
As my students also know, I am always lurking on about a million Slack messages…looking for their posts in English so I can find what we need to focus on in the lessons. I love love love seeing them use what they’ve learned in previous English classes! It’s rewarding to feel like the things I’m teaching them are really sticking and helping improve their work and communication skills! (Special shout out to DATA&AI Team in particular, who do a really good job of taking what they learn and applying it to their work!)

일단 고맙다는 말을 하고 싶습니다! 항상 수고하시고 노력해주셔서 감사해요. 영어에 관심 가져주시고, 제가 즐겁고 흥미롭게 일할 수 있게 해주셔서 고맙습니다. 조금 힘들거나 자신감이 없을 때에도 용기 내셔서 열심히 영어로 말해주시는 부분도 고맙습니다!! 그리고 항상 스스로를 믿었으면 좋겠어요! 앞으로도 베이글코드의 모든 멤버들을 돕기 위해 노력하겠습니다~!
